Are We Gods???

John 10:34 (NIV)
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, `I have said you are gods' ?

John 10:34 is quoting Psalm 82:6:

Psalm 82:6 (NIV)
"I said, `You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'

Now lets look at some other scripture:

Isaiah 44:6
This is what the LORD says-- Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.

Isaiah 46:9
Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.

Isaiah 43:10
"You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me."

Isaiah 45:21-22
21. Declare what is to be, present it-- let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. 22. Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

Well, God does not lie, and He is not divided against Himself, so what is He saying in these verses??

In some other passages, the word "god" (lower case) is used to describe those that have authority over people in certain circumstances. Satan, for example, is called the "god of this age"! Does that mean he is God???
Satan has some control over people during this age. People that worship idols call them their "gods", but of course they are not God Almighty!

The judges in the Old Testament were given authority over the Israelites, and God Almighty used the term "gods" to describe them.

Psalm 82:6,7 (NIV)
6. "I said, `You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.' 7. But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler."

Verse 7 says "But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler."
God says that although you are "gods", you are really just mere men!

Jesus quoted this psalm in John 10:34 to show how He was different from the rest of us humans!

People sometimes get caught up in the use of the word "god" in this psalm and think they are equal Almighty God, but that is obviously not true!

Paul sums it up best:

1 Corinthians 8:5,6
5. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6. yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

God was not formed from other Gods, and there were no other Gods before Him. Our God is uncreated! And although we may be "gods" in the sense that we have been given some authority, we are but just men and women.

PRAYER
Thank You Father for Your Word. Thank You for the blessings in Your Word that I can receive, that will not only bless ME, but bless others, and even YOU! Help me understand Your Word so I can let Your ways govern my life.
In Jesus' Name, Amen
